The Cowgirl volleyball team (5-2 overall) continued their winning ways as they closed out the 2005 Mean Green Classic with a sweep (30-8, 30-21, 30-16) over the Centenary College Ladies, on Saturday, in Denton, Texas.
Sophomore Rachel Smith led the way for the Cowgirls with 11 kills, nine digs and a .500 (11-1-20) hitting percentage. Sophomore Angie Hellbaum followed with eight kills and two players had five. Freshman setter Tasha Weishahn closed out the match with 25 assists and a career high 12 digs, which helped her earn Tournament MVP honors, while Carissa Lee led the way with 13 digs. Wyoming hit .277 (43-15-101) compared to -.029 (20-23-105) by Centenary. Junior Andrea Seele also earned All-Tournament Team honors.
"We came out from the beginning of the and really set the tone," said head coach Pat Stangle. "I felt to win all three matches on the road this weekend really showed our ability to come out, stay composed and get done what we needed to. We will now come home and prepare for a couple of tough matches coming up next weekend."
It was all Cowgirls in the first game as they scored the first eight straight points before Centenary could manage to score. They quickly increased their advantage to double-digits as CC really struggled. In fact, Wyoming held them to eight points in the entire game to win 30-8.
Centenary took a very early 3-1 lead in the second game, but it was short lived as a 13-3 run by the Cowgirls put them up 14-6. They maintained a significant lead throughout as the Ladies could only manage to pull within eight points. UW would take the game 30-21 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Cowgirls took the lead from the beginning of the third game and never looked back. They would win the game 30-16 and match 3-0.
Wyoming will now return home for two non-conference match-ups. They will face Florida A&M, on Friday, and the New Mexico State Aggies, on Saturday night. Both matches will begin at 7:00 p.m.
