The Cowgirl Volleyball team (5-3 overall) opened up the weekend with a tough four game loss (33-31, 26-30, 19-30, 27-30) against the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers, on Friday night, in Laramie.

Three Cowgirls finished the night in double-figures, including sophomore Lauren Scott. She recorded 12 kills, five block assists and hit .529 (12-3-17). Fellow sophomores Rachel Smith and Angie Hellbaum had 19 and 12 kills respectively. Carissa Lee led the way with 15 digs followed by Michelle Weydert with 13. As a team, the Cowgirls hit .171 (60-30-175) on the night compared to .316 (79-25-171).

"I thought we played a very crafty and volleyball smart team tonight," said head coach Pat Stangle. "I felt we maintained our composure except in game three when we let it get away from us a bit. We were right in this match, just one or two plays could have made a difference in this match. We made plays in game one and they made plays in two and four, so other than game three the match could have gone either way."

Florida A&M took control of the first game jumping out to an 11-7 lead. The Cowgirls battled back down 14-9, they would go on an 8-3 run to even things up at 17 all. FAMU quickly regained a six-point advantage but UW continued to fight running off the next 8 of 12 points to tie things up at 27. They would eventually earn game point at 29-27, but the Lady Rattlers scored the next three straight to take game point. The Cowgirls kept their composure and scored four of the next five to win the game 33-31.

Wyoming jumped out early in the second game with an 8-4 lead. Down 14-10, the Lady Rattlers scored seven of the next eight to regain the lead 17-15. The Cowgirls rallied back to even up the score at 22 all and kept it close until four straight points by FAMU helped them tie up the match 30-26..

It was all Florida A&M in the third game as they took the lead from the beginning and never looked back. The Cowgirls could only manage to pull within five points as the Lady Rattlers won the game 30-19 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Cowgirls came out fired up in the fourth game as they took the early 5-2 lead. FAMU stormed back with a 7-3 run to go up for the first time 9-8. The teams traded points with no one really gaining more than a one or two point lead. Finally, the momentum started to swing the way of the Lady Rattlers. With both teams tied at 22 all, they would close things out by scoring the final 8 of 13 points to win the game 30-27 and the match, 3-1.

The Cowgirls will close out the weekend tomorrow night as they host the New Mexico State Aggies at 7:00 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
