Wyoming Volleyball Closes Out Road Trip with Four Set Loss to Air Force

The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (8-7 overall, 0-3 MW) concluded their road trip with a four set (22-25, 23-25, 25-23, 23-25) loss to Air Force (4-11 overall, 1-2 MW) on Saturday night at Falcon court. It was the Falcons' first win over UW since Nov. 15, 2003. Senior middle blocker Reese Plante recorded a team-high 13 kills on the night, as she surpassed 700 kills in her career. She is now the fifth Cowgirl to record over 700 career kills and 400 blocks.
The Falcons hit .195 (60-30-134) in the contest, as the Cowgirls finished the evening hitting .170 (52-26-153). Wyoming, the nation's leader in blocks recorded 13 on the night compared to Air Force's eight.
Junior middle blocker Erin Kirby added nine kills and seven blocking assists for the Cowgirls. Senior setter Rachel Keyes recorded a season-high 27 assists, as she surpassed 2,000 assists in her career.
The Falcons were paced by junior middle blocker by Ayesha Hein, as she record 13 kills, hitting .409 (13-4-22). She also added a team-high four blocks. Junior setter Hillary Keltner dished out a match-high 51 assists.
Air Force came out flying in the opening frame taking a 7-1 advantage. Wyoming battled back cutting the lead to within two-points on four different occasions, but Air Force closed out the set on an Akokwe Clement kill to take the stanza 25-22. It was Air Force's first win in a set over Wyoming since Oct. 2, 2008, as the Cowgirls' streak spanned 26 sets.
Neither team could grab an early edge in the second set until Air Force used a 5-0 run to build a 13-8 lead. The Falcons continued to put pressure on the Cowgirls in the frame expanding their advantage to 20-13. Wyoming would not go away battling back with a 10-4 run to make it 24-23. Outside hitter Cami Richan's kill gave the Falcons the 25-23 set win. Air Force recorded a match-high 16 kills in the set, as UW hit a match-low .088 (11-8-34).
The Cowgirls battled back from an early deficient to take an 8-6 lead in the third set. Wyoming maintained its edge and held off Air Force in the closing points of the frame. Kirby and Bridget Shanahan sealed the 25-23 set victory with a block.
The Falcons took the final frame 25-23. After Air Force got an edge in the frame at 12-7, the Cowgirls battled back to tie the set at 16-16. Plante fueled the Wyoming run with three kills. Both teams tried to gain the lead late in the stanza, but Air Force closed out the frame with a 3-1 run to take the match.
Wyoming returns to action on Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader at the UniWyo Sports Complex. The Cowgirls will host regional rival Colorado at 5 p.m. MT., followed by an 8 p.m. match with Black Hills State.
