Cowgirl Volleyball Earns Tough Five Set Victory Over UNLV

After falling behind 2-1 in the match, the Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (11-7 overall, 2-2 MW) defeated the UNLV Rebels (8-8 overall, 1-2 MW) in five sets (25-17, 19-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-5) on Saturday afternoon in Las Vegas.

"I'm really proud how they bounced back after a tough loss at SDSU," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "Reese played outstanding with eight blocks and hitting. 400, while Jodi (Purdy) was a dominate factor in this match. Meghan (Sipe) also provided stability and in the back row at the end of the match. It was a total team effort and when we needed big plays we got them."

Three Cowgirls finished the night in double-digits led by junior Jodi Purdy. She recorded a match high 14 kills, along with ten digs and five total blocks. Senior Tamara Kitic added 13 kills and 12 digs, while Camille Coffman finished with ten kills. Five players also finished with double-figures in digs led by sophomore Rachel Keyes with 18. Freshman Whitney Smith recorded a career high 20 assists and 12 digs on the day. Wyoming hit .213 (58-23-164) for the match and out blocked the Rebels 15.5-8.

UNLV was led by Makenzie Moea'i who had a team high 12 kills, while adding six digs. She was followed by Stephanie Thelen who had a match high 37 assists, 15 digs and nine kills. The Rebels hit .118 (55-33-186) for the match.

Wyoming had a solid start in the match against UNLV as they took the early 8-4 advantage. The Rebels scored three of the next four points to pull within two, 9-7, which two straight points by the Cowgirls put them back up four, 11-7. UNLV chipped away at the lead with four unanswered of their own to even it up at 11 all. UW ran off the next seven of nine points to give them a five point lead, 18-13. After a timeout by the Rebels, they would score the next two points to make it a three-point set, 18-15. The Cowgirls responded with a 7-2 run to close out the first set to win it 25-17.

UNLV rebounded in the second set as took the lead 7-4 and scored the next two points to extend that to five, 9-4. After a Wyoming timeout, they scored two points to pull within three, 9-6, but the Rebels ran off four of five points to go back ahead by six, 13-7. Three unanswered by the Cowgirls made it a three-point game once again, 13-10. Over the next nine points, Wyoming would out score the Rebels 6-3, but still trailed by three 19-16. Unfortunately, they couldn't get any closer as UNLV would win the set, 25-19.

The momentum stayed on the side of the Rebels as they opened up a 9-3 lead to start set three. The Cowgirls battled their way back into it with a 9-2 run to take their first lead, 12-11. UNLV scored the next point, but Wyoming answered with seven of the next ten to give them a four-point advantage, 18-14. The Rebels didn't go away as they chipped away at the lead and would eventually tie it up at 22 all. The Rebels then scored three of the last four points to take the set, 25-23, and a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set, the Rebels picked up where they left off from the previous set by taking an early 5-2 advantage. After a Wyoming timeout, the Cowgirls would go on an 8-1 run to take their first lead, 10-6. UNLV responded with seven of the next nine points to retake the lead, 13-12. They would extend that to three 17-14, but Wyoming made a small run to even it back up at 18 all. The two teams traded scores over the next six points to make it 21-21. The Cowgirls answered with four straight points to win the set, 25-21, to force a fifth set.

Wyoming was fired up to begin the fifth set as they jumped out to the 7-1 lead. They would extend their advantage to nine, 11-2, with a 4-1 run. The Cowgirls held the Rebels to just three points the rest of the way as they won the set 15-5 and the match 3-2.

The Cowgirls step out of conference action this week as they take on the Northern Colorado Bears, on Wednesday, Oct. 5. The match is set for 7:00 p.m. in Greeley. They will then return home on Saturday, Oct. 8, as they host the Colorado State Rams. The match will be at 7:00 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
