The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (16-2 overall, 2-1 in the MWC) won their second straight match with a three set win (25-23, 25-14, 25-18) over the San Diego State Aztecs (7-9 overall, 2-2 in the MWC), on Saturday night, in Laramie.

"It was amazing tonight," said UW head coach Carrie Yerty. "The fans keep coming back and this is a great atmosphere to play in. We started off the match a little bit tense, but once you get going and into the game plan it keeps building. When you have an outside hitter like Jodi Purdy and the way she played tonight, she carried the load. Reese (Roehrkasse) and JennaRae (Jester) had outstanding nights, plus Jadranka is steady as always. They really believe in each other and what they are doing out on the court.

"We were fortunate to only have one match this week. San Diego State came in after playing a five set match on Thursday night with Colorado State, which is tough. Our players did a great job executing the game plan and are starting to believe that Cowgirl volleyball is going to be special this year."

Sophomore Jodi Purdy led the way with 14 kills, nine digs and three service aces. She hit .500 (14-2-24) and recorded four total blocks. Reese Roehrkasse followed with six kills, while two others finished with five. Jadranka Tramosljanin added a team high 12 digs. Wyoming hit .184 (36-17-103) and out blocked the Aztecs 7.5 to 6.0.

The Aztecs were led by Kyley Sexton with nine kills and six digs, while Raegen Shelton added seven kills. They hit -.009 (26-27-106) for the match.

The teams were tied at three all through six points until SDSU ran off four straight to go up 7-3 to begin the first set. The Cowgirls scored four of five to pull within one, 8-7. The Aztecs quickly regained a three point lead, 10-7, but Wyoming fought back and tied it up at 13. They would score the next two points to take their first lead 15-13. After San Diego State ended the run, Wyoming pulled ahead by four, 20-16. The Aztecs scored the next three to make it a one point set, 20-19. With the score tied at 23, the Cowgirls ran off the last two points to win the set 25-23.

Wyoming took a 5-2 advantage to begin the second set. After a couple of points by the Aztecs, the Cowgirls went on a 5-1 run to go ahead 10-5. They would increase that margin to eight, 16-8. With the score 21-10 in favor of the Cowgirls, SDSU scored the next three points which made it 21-13. That would be as close as they would get as UW took the second set, 25-14.

The momentum carried over to the third set for Wyoming as they took a 10-4 lead. Out of a timeout, San Diego State answered with a 6-2 run to pull within two, 12-10. The Cowgirls scored 9 of 11 to extend the lead back to seven, 19-12. The two teams played even the rest of the stretch, but Wyoming would win the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.

Wyoming will be back out on the road next week for two matches. The Cowgirls will take on the UNLV Rebels, on Thursday, Oct. 7. The match is set for 7:30 p.m. MT and will be on The Mtn. Sports Network. They will wrap up the weekend on Saturday, Oct. 9, against the Air Force Academy Falcons. That match is set for 7:00 p.m. in Colorado Springs.
