Oct. 11, 2008
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball team (3-12 overall, 2-4 Mountain West Conference) ended their weekend with a three set loss (20-25, 14-25, 21-25) against the TCU Frogs (15-5 overall, 4-3 MWC) on Saturday night in Laramie.
"Tonight was tough, especially when you go back-to-back matches with a loss," said UW head coach Carrie Yerty. "I'm proud of this team, because they come everyday and work hard. They compete to the best of their ability and I don't ever feel like they give up. Sometimes we get beat and tonight that happened. We had a hard time working around their block and it took the wind out of our sails a bit."
Wyoming was led by sophomore outside hitter Dani Bedore who recorded ten kills, six digs and three total blocks. She was followed by Lauren Whitney who added six kills. Samantha Eley finished with a team high eight digs, while Carissa Lee added seven. The Cowgirls hit .028 (26-23-106) for the match.
Christy Hudson and Lauren Otto each recorded eight kills to lead the way for the Frogs, while Otto added 11 digs. TCU hit .247 (40-18-89) for the match and out blocked the Cowgirls 8.5 to 5.0.
TCU took a small 3-0 lead to begin the first set, which was answered with a 3-1 run by Wyoming to tie it up at four. The Frogs scored the next three straight to go up 7-4. The Cowgirls came back with a 6-2 run to make it 11-10. Over the next several points, the two teams battled back and forth until TCU scored five of six to gain a 17-13 advantage, which they extended to six, 20-14. The Cowgirls came back and pulled to within two, 22-20. Unfortunately, they would fall short as TCU won the set 25-20.
In the second set, the Cowgirls scored the first two points and then TCU answered with eight of nine to go up 8-3. Wyoming would score the next point and the Frogs would extend the lead with a 7-2 run to make the score 15-6. Things continued to be a struggle fro Wyoming as the lead grew to double-digits 19-7. Despite out scoring TCU the remainder of the way, 7-6, Wyoming would fall 25-14 in the set to fall behind 2-0 in the match.
Wyoming took a slight two point lead, 5-3, to begin the third set, which they extended to six, 10-4. The Frogs pulled to within three, 10-7, but the Cowgirls scored the next four points to regain a 14-7 advantage. TCU battled their way back in it with an 8-4 run to pull within three, 18-15. They would go on to score the next five in a row to take a 20-18 lead. From that point, Wyoming lost all of their momentum as they were out scored 5-3 down the stretch to fall 25-21 in the set and 3-0 in the match.
Wyoming will head back out on the road next week for two matches. They will take on the San Diego State Aztecs, Thursday, Oct. 16, and the UNLV Rebels, on Saturday, Oct. 18.
