LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (17-4 overall, 3-3 in the MWC) struggled in a three set loss (24-26, 21-25, 22-25) against the New Mexico Lobos (11-7 overall, 3-2 in the MWC), on Thursday night in Laramie.
"I was pleased with the way our young kids came in and contributed," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "I thought we blocked well tonight, and had chances to win the first set. We just struggled with executing down the stretch. We need to get back in the gym and find a way to get us going in the right direction. It's always disappointing to lose at home, but we have to come back and get ready for Saturday against TCU."
Sophomore Jodi Purdy recorded her eighth double-double of the season with a team high 11 kills and 14 digs, plus four total blocks. She was followed by Lauren Whitney with six kills and two others with five kills each. Reese Roehrkasse led the way with a team high five total blocks. The Cowgirls hit .073 (35-26-123) for the match and out blocked the Lobos 9-8.
New Mexico was led by Lisa Meeter who recorded a match high 12 kills, along with 13 digs and a .367(12-1-30) hitting percentage. Allison Buck finished with a team high 16 digs. The Lobos hit .159 (37-20-107) for the match.
The Cowgirls gained the upper hand to begin the match as they took an 8-3 lead. Out of a timeout, New Mexico scored four straight to pull within one, 8-7. Wyoming got the lead back to three, 12-9, but the Lobos scored three of four to make it 13-12. The Cowgirls went on a 4-1 run to regain a 17-13 advantage. Wyoming couldn't shake the Lobos as they made it 20-19 with a 6-3 run of their own. Wyoming would push the lead back to three, 22-19. Unfortunately, UNM would tie it up at 22 and held off a set point to score the final three points to win the first set 26-24.
After falling behind 3-1, the Cowgirls scored three straight to go up 4-3. The Lobos scored three of four to retake a 6-5 advantage. A 4-0 run by Wyoming gave them a 9-6 lead, but the Lobos responded with a 7-2 run to pull ahead 13-11. With the score tied up at 14, the two teams traded scores until UNM took a small 19-16 lead. It would be a lead they would never relinquish as New Mexico took the set, 25-21, and a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, Wyoming opened up with an early 4-0 lead, which was answered with five straight by the Lobos. The two teams traded points back and forth until the Cowgirls went on a 5-0 run to regain an 11-7 advantage. UNM would respond with a 5-1 run of their own to tie it up at 12 all. No one could really break away until the Lobos took a 22-19 advantage. Despite the best efforts of the Cowgirls, they would fall 25-22 in the set and 3-0 in the match.
