Oct. 16, 2010
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (18-4 overall, 4-3 in the MWC) closed out the weekend with a three set win (25-11, 25-22, 25-20) over the TCU Horned Frogs (12-8 overall, 3-3 in the MWC), on Saturday afternoon in Laramie.
"The setters did a nice job of executing our game plan and knowing where to aggressively attack the zones," said UW head coach Carrie Yerty. "Our hitters were on fire today and when it all comes together it's a great thing to see. It is always nice to rebound after a loss and it really showed our character. TCU is a good team. They've had a little bit of bad luck with injury and so for us to beat them in three after they went five with Colorado State, it's nice for us."
For the second straight match, Jodi Purdy recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 digs, while hitting .321 (13-4-28). She was followed by JennaRae Jester with nine kills, three blocks and a .643 (9-0-14) hitting percentage. The Cowgirls hit .351 (44-10-97) for the match and out blocked the Frogs, 6-3.
TCU was led by Jordan Raines with eight kills and seven digs, while Christy Hudson also added eight kills. The Frogs hit .156 (33-18-96) for the match.
The Cowgirls took an early 5-1 lead to begin the match. TCU scored three of the next four to pull within two, 6-4. Wyoming ran off the next five points to extend the lead to seven, 11-4. The Frogs scored the next point to end the run but the Cowgirls continued to maintain the lead. With the score 14-7 in favor of UW, the Cowgirls would score the final 11 of 15 to win the first set, 25-11.
After TCU scored the first point of the second set, Wyoming went up 3-1. The Frogs scored five of the next six to take a 6-4 advantage. Following a Wyoming timeout, they would go on a 7-2 run to retake an 11-8 lead. TCU responded with a 7-2 run of their own to go up 15-13, but four straight points by Wyoming gave them a two point lead, 17-15. The Frogs would pull to within one twice, but Wyoming held on to take the second set, 25-22 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The momentum continued on the Cowgirls side as they opened up a 7-1 lead in the third set, which they extended to double-figures, 12-2. TCU battled back with a 6-2 run to pull within six, 14-8, but Wyoming scored the next six of nine to make it 20-11. They would eventually earn match point at 24-14. The Frogs wouldn't go away easily as they scored six straight points before Wyoming won the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
Wyoming will step out of conference play as they host the Colorado Christian Cougars, on Tuesday, Oct. 19. They will then return to MWC play on Friday, Oct. 22, against the Colorado State Rams in Ft. Collins.
