SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (13-8 overall, 3-4 MW) earned a huge road victory with a four-set win (25-15, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22) over the San Diego State Aztecs (9-8 overall, 4-3 MW) on Thursday night. It's the first time since Oct. 6, 2007 that the Cowgirls have defeated the Aztecs in San Diego.
"This team has not played very well on the road the last few seasons and that is something we've been working on," said head coach Chad Callihan. "It was nice to see the team put it all together on the road against a great San Diego State team. We seemed very focused and each player took care of their responsibilities."
Three Cowgirls paced the way led by senior Reese Plante and sophomore Bridget Shanahan. They each recorded 13 kills each while Shanahan added five block assists. Middle blocker Erin Kirby finished with 11 kills, plus a team high ten kills and a .417 (11-1-24) hitting percentage. San Diego State turned it around in the second set as they took a 7-2 lead. Started by a Kayla Slofkiss kill, the Cowgirls scored three straight points to close the gap to two, 7-5. Out of a timeout, SDSU recorded four straight kills to regain a three-point advantage, 13-10. The Cowgirls rallied back with a 7-1 run to put them ahead by three, 17-14. San Diego State made it a one point contest, 17-16, but Wyoming ran off four of the next five points to make it, 21-17, and then would earn set point, 24-18. The Aztecs wouldn't go away quietly as they scored four unanswered to make it 24-22. Finally a kill by Plante gave the set to the Cowgirls 25-22 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Wyoming seemed to carry the momentum into the third set as they went ahead 5-2. Four straight points by the Aztecs gave them their first lead, 6-5. A kill by Plante on the next side out would even things up, but SDSU scored five of the next six to give them a four-point advantage, 12-8. Shanahan recorded the next two scores for Wyoming to close the gap to three, which was answered with four straight points by the Aztecs giving them a 16-11 lead. After two straight points by San Diego State, they would commit three straight attack errors to hold onto a one point lead, 21-20. Unfortunately, the Aztecs scored four of the last five points to win the set, 25-21.
In the fourth set, four kills and an attack error gave Wyoming the early 5-1 lead. San Diego State chipped away at the lead and tied it up at eight all. The Cowgirls answered with three straight points to go back up by three, 11-8. The Aztecs closed the gap to one, 11-10, and then the two teams traded points. With the score 13-12 in favor of UW, they would go on a 5-2 run to extend their lead to four, 18-14. Two straight points by SDSU brought them to within two, 18-16. Wyoming ran off five of the next seven to give them a five point advantage, 23-18. The Aztecs rallied and closed it 24-22, but a kill from Kirby gave UW the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-1.
