Cowgirl Volleyball Falls To UNLV in Four Sets

The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team (13-9, 3-5 MW) dropped a four set match (22-25,17-25,25-22,12-25) to UNLV (11-7, 6-2 MW) on Saturday night at the Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas, Nev. Wyoming was led by sophomore Bridget Shanahan, as she recorded a team-high 13 kills.
The Rebels outhit the Cowgirls .268 (62-18-164) to .164 (52-25-165) on the night. Wyoming, the Mountain West leader in blocks was out blocked by UNLV nine to six.
Wyoming senior Reese Plante recorded 11 kills on the evening. Junior Erin Kirby followed with 10 kills and four blocks on the night. She is now two blocks away from 500 in her career. Senior Libero Becky Stewartled UW defensively with 27 digs.
UNLV was led by Sekola Falemaka with a match-high 16 kills. She also paced the Rebels' defensively with a team-high 25 digs.
The Rebels never trailed in the opening set taking the frame 25-22. The Cowgirls tied the stanza on four different occasions, but a 3-0 run by UNLV closed out the frame. The Rebels hit .231 (14-5-31) in the opening set, as Wyoming hit .140 (14-9-43). UNLV caused problems for UW at the net defensively recording three blocks in the opening frame.
Wyoming struggled to get the offense going in the second set falling to the Rebels 25-17. UW hit a match-low .077 (11-7-52) in the frame, as UNLV recorded 15 kills in the set, hitting .234 (15-4-47). The Rebels used a 4-0 run to expand their lead to 9-3 to gain the momentum in the stanza and take a 2-0 match lead on Wyoming.
The Cowgirls came out firing in the third frame with 18 kills on their way to 25-22 win in the set. Wyoming hit a match-high .394 (18-4-39) in the stanza to cut the UNLV match lead to 2-1. UW used a 5-0 run halfway through the stanza to take a commanding 18-12 lead. The Rebels used a 6-1 lead to cut the Cowgirls' lead to 21-19. Wyoming responded by closing out the frame with a strong finish, as Plante led the way with four kills in the set.
The Rebels used a 7-1 run to build a 14-5 lead on their way to a 25-12 win in the fourth set. Wyoming struggled offensively in the frame with nine kills and six errors. UNLV was clicking on offense in the final set with 17 kills with a hitting percentage of .400 (17-3-35).
The Cowgirls host San Jose State at the UniWyo Sports Complex next Thursday at 7 p.m. MT.
