Cowgirl Volleyball Ends Road Trip With Win

Colorado Springs, Colo. - The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team (12-9 overall, 5-4 in the MWC) wrapped up their road trip with a four game win (29-31, 30-28, 30-20, 30-15) over the Air Force Academy Falcons (4-14 overall, 0-8 in the MWC) on Friday night in Colorado Springs.
The two teams started out the first game by trading points back and forth. With the score 8-7 in favor of the Falcons, Wyoming went on a 9-1 run to open up a 16-9 advantage. Air Force answered back by scoring the next eight of twelve to pull within three, 20-17, and eventually took the lead 24-23. After the Cowgirls evened things up at 24 all, the battle was on as the lead changed hands several times. Finally, the Falcons would pull out the first game, 31-29.
The Falcons took control of the second game early on with a 9-5 lead. Wyoming pulled to within two, but Air Force quickly scored four straight to go back up 13-7. A 6-1 run from the Cowgirls once again brought them to within one, but they couldn't manage to even things up. Finally, they would score the next seven of eleven points to regain a 20-18 lead. With the score tied at 23, UW seemed to gain some momentum by scoring four straight, unfortunately Air Force kept hanging around. UW would eventually pull out the game 30-28.
Wyoming opened up the third game strong and took a very early lead 7-2. Air Force answered back by scoring the next four of five to pull within two, but the Cowgirls ran off five straight to retake a 13-6 advantage. The Falcons managed to get the score to within five unfortunately that would be as close as they would get. The Cowgirls would win the game, 30-20, to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Game four saw the Cowgirls gain a very early lead 6-3, but Air Force scored the next four of six to pull within one, 8-7. Wyoming responded by scoring nine unanswered to go up by ten, 17-7. It continued to be a struggle for the Falcons to score points as the Cowgirls would win the game 30-15 and the match, 3-1.
Wyoming was led by Rachel Smith, who finished the night with 16 kills, 13 digs and three block solos. She was followed by Andrea Tuck with 15 kills, Shelby Heggie with 12 and Lauren Scott with ten. As a team, the Cowgirls hit .253 (64-27-126).
The Cowgirls will be at home next week as they host the UNLV Rebels, on Friday night, and the San Diego State Aztecs, on Saturday night. Both matches are set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
