Cowgirls Lose Heartbreaker In Five

Laramie, Wyoming - The Wyoming volleyball team (14-10, 3-6 in the MWC) lost a five game thriller (29-31, 30-26, 31-29, 26-30, 6-15) to the Utah Utes (13-6, 7-1 in the MWC) on Saturday night.
The Cowgirls opened up the game by taking a 7-3 lead, but the Utes answered with an 8-2 run to gain an 11-9 advantage. Wyoming tied things up at eleven and then the scoring went back and forth until the Cowgirls took a two point lead, 18-16. Utah responded by scoring the next seven of nine points to hold a three point lead, but the Cowgirls quickly evened up the score at 23. The two teams traded points until the momentum seemed shift towards Utah as they gained a 28-26 lead. Despite holding off two game points, the Cowgirls fell 31-29 in game one.
It was close to begin game two until four straight points from the Cowgirls gave them a 9-5 lead. Utah answered with a 9-4 run to take their first lead of the game 14-13. After Wyoming evened things up at 15 neither team too a lead larger than one or two points. Things seemed to once again go in the Utes direction as they went up 26-24, but the Cowgirls responded by scoring the next six points to take game two 30-26.
Utah led from the start of game three by taking an 8-5 lead, but the Cowgirls went on a 9-3 run to take their first lead 13-10. After a 7-4 run from the Utes tied the score at 17, the teams really battled back and forth. It would go down to the end as the Cowgirls would pull out the 31-29 win in game three.
After Wyoming scored the first two points of game four, the Utes ran off six straight points to open up a 6-2 lead. The Cowgirls tried to climb their way back in to it with a 9-6 run to pull within one, 12-11, but Utah answered by scoring the next 11 of 17 points to regain a six point lead 23-17. Unwilling to give up UW battled their way back with another 7-3 run to close within two points. Unfortunately, the Utes would win the game 30-26 to force a fifth and deciding game.
Utah tool control of the fifth game from the beginning with 7-2 lead, but the Cowgirls battled back to within two, 7-5. Unfortunately, they wouldn't get any closer than that as the Utes would outscore Wyoming 8-1 to win the game 15-6 and the match 3-2.
"I'm really proud of how we battled against Utah," said head coach Jim Barnes. "We really followed the game plan, the girls played with a ton of heart and other than a couple plays we felt like we could have taken this match. You eliminate a couple of mistakes I think we pull out a victory, but overall it was a great effort."
Four Cowgirls finished the night with double-figure kills, including junior Sara Maytorena. She finished with a team high 22 kills, along with 11 digs and five block assists. Jill Roslund and Andrea Seele both recorded 13 kills, while Leah Powers finished with 11. Outside hitter Vanessa Latimer once again led the Cowgirls in digs with 14 digs as Amanda Miller tallied 11 digs and Hana Perlee had ten. As a team, Wyoming hit .214 (76-37-182) and recorded 11 total team blocks.
Wyoming will be on the road this week as they travel to California and Nevada. They will face the UNLV Rebels, on Thursday night, in Las Vegas, and the San Diego State Aztecs, on Saturday night, in San Diego.
