Oct. 26, 2013
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (14-10 overall, 4-6 MW) struggled in a three set loss (25-12, 25-21, 25-23) against the Fresno State Bulldogs (13-9, 7-3 MW) on Saturday afternoon in Laramie.
Junior Erin Kirby led the way with eight kills and eight total blocks. She also hit .278 (8-3-18) for the match. Bridget Shanahan recorded five kills and five blocks. Wyoming hit .135 (26-14-89) for the match but out blocked the Bulldogs 10-4.
Fresno State was led by Korrin Wild with a match high 15 kills along with seven digs. She was followed by Marissa Brand with 14 kills and Holly Franks with 12 kills. The Bulldogs hit .300 (49-16-110) for the match.
"We would love to get a consistent effort out of the group. That's what we are striving for, we've been playing well on Thursday night's and not so well on Saturday's," said head coach Chad Callihan. "We talk a lot about setting the tone for the match, we didn't do that today and Fresno State did. First set, they jump out early, we have to call timeout and didn't respond well to it. From there it snowballed, even though at times we put a couple of good points together, it was never consistent against a good team."
The Bulldogs jumped out quickly in the first set as they took an 8-2 lead. A service error by Holly Franks would finally end the scoring drought for the Cowgirls and they would close the gap to four, 11-7. Unfortunately, the rest of the set belonged to Fresno State. They would out score Wyoming 14-5 the remainder of the way as the Bulldogs won the first set, 25-12.
In the second set, the momentum remained on the side of Fresno State as they jumped ahead 8-3. The Cowgirls would answer with an 8-2 run to even things up at 11 all. A kill by Erin Kirby on the next side out would help the Cowgirls score the next four of five to take the lead, 15-12. The Bulldogs chipped away at the lead going on a 5-1 run to regain the one point advantage, 17-16. An attack error evened it all up at 17 and the two teams traded scores over the next several points. With it all tied up at 21 all, FSU scored the final four points to win the set, 25-21, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
It was all even through the first six points of the third set until Fresno State scored six of the next seven points to take a 10-4 lead. Wyoming battled back with a 7-1 run to tie it up at 11 all. The Bulldogs responded with a 6-2 run of their own to retake the 17-13 lead. The Cowgirls tried to close the gap and pulled to within two, 21-19. FSU scored the next three of six to give them set point, 24-22. Wyoming held off one match point, but the Bulldogs won the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-0.
Wyoming will be back out on the road next week for two matches. They will face the Utah State Aggies, on Thursday, Oct. 31, and the Boise State Broncos, on Saturday, Nov. 2. Both matches are set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
