Oct. 27, 2007
PROVO, Utah -
The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball team (10-11 overall, 4-8 in the MWC) wrapped up the weekend with a four game loss (30-24, 20-30, 28-30, 24-30) against the BYU Cougars (15-6 overall, 7-4 in the MWC) on Saturday night in Provo.
"It was a pretty good match tonight," said UW head coach Pat Stangle. "BYU just made a few more adjustments than us. It was a back and forth match and we had our chances to win a couple more points and games."
Senior Angie Hellbaum finished with a team leading 22 kills while hitting .327 (22-6-49) for the match. Rachel Smith recorded 20 kills and eight digs followed by Lauren Whitney with nine kills and 11 digs. Carissa Lee led the way with 20 digs while Tasha Weishahn had 51 assists and 11 digs. The Cowgirls hit .200 (63-30-165) and had seven total blocks.
Four players finished the night in double-figures in kills for the Cougars led by Rachel Dyer. She recorded 18 kills and ten block assists. Chelsea Goodman followed with 16 kills and 17 digs while Bryn Porter added 15 kills and Ashton Hanson had 12 kills. BYU hit .308 (67-19-156) and had 17 total blocks.
BYU opened up the first game by taking an early 10-5 lead. The Cowgirls answered with a 7-2 run to pull even at 12 all. The Cougars would score the next point but Wyoming scored the next five of six points to gain a three point advantage 17-14. They would hold on to a three point lead over the next several points until BYU made it a two point game, 22-20. That would be as close as they would get as the Cowgirls closed out the game on an 8-4 run to win the first game 30-24.
In the second game, the Cowgirls fell behind once again to a going down by six, 11-5. They would go on a small run to pull within four, 14-10. The Cougars went on a 7-4 scoring run to extend the lead back to eight points, 22-14. Unfortunately, Wyoming couldn't make enough of a come back as BYU scored the final eight of fourteen to win the second game, 30-20.
Wyoming jumped out to an early 7-1 lead to begin the third game, but the Cougars responded by scoring seven of the next eight to even it up at eight all. The two teams then traded points back and forth for the next ten points until the Cougars opened up a three point lead 17-14. The Cowgirls battled back with an 8-5 run to even it up at 22 all. The scoring went back and forth over the next couple of points until with the score tied at 25 all the Cougars scored the next two points to go up 27-27. Wyoming evened it up at 27, but BYU scored the final three of four points to win the game 30-28.
It was all Cougars to start off the fourth game as they opened up a 7-1 advantage. Over the next several points, the two teams played evenly over the next several points, but BYU continued to maintain a significant lead. They would extend the lead by scoring seven of the next eleven to go up double-figures, 19-9. It was never close after that as Wyoming only managed to pull within nine points as the Cougars won the game 30-24 and the match 3-1.
Wyoming will host two matches next week as they host the San Diego State Aztecs, on Thursday, Nov. 1, and the UNLV Rebels, on Saturday, Nov. 3.
