Nov. 14, 2013
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (16-13 overall, 6-9 MW) won in four sets (22-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-22) over the Air Force Falcons (6-20 overall, 3-11 MW) on Thursday night. The victory gives the program 600 wins in its history.
Two Cowgirls had two players in double-figures on the night. Kayla Slofkiss and Reese Plante each recorded 13 kills each. Bridget Shanahan finished with nine kills while two others recorded eight. Erin Kirby finished her night with a team high five blocks and Becky Stewart led the way with 26 digs. Wyoming hit .297 (57-13-148) for the match and out blocked Air Force 9-5.
Air Force was led by Cami Richan with a match high 16 kills while she was followed by Ayesha Hein with 13. Rachael Bradley-Powers recorded a team high 18 kills for the Falcons. They hit .235 (66-28-162) for the match.
"I thought we competed well as the match went on," said head coach Chad Callihan. "We came out a little lethargic which is what we did the first time we played them. Air Force is scrappy they fight and come ready to compete every night. We fought through a little bit of that tonight, but we did some nice things as the match wore on."
Air Force scored three of the first four points of the match to take a 3-1 lead. Two kills by the Cowgirls evened it up at three. The two teams traded scores over the next several points until Wyoming took a small 9-7 advantage. The Falcons earned the next two points to tie the score, but UW quickly regained the 12-10 lead. Air Force responded with a 6-1 run to make it 16-13. A service error by the Falcons ended the scoring drought for Wyoming but Air Force would build their lead to five, 20-15. Started by a block solo from Reese Plante, they would score five unanswered to even up the set at 20 all. Unfortunately, the Falcons scored five of the final seven points to take set one, 25-22.
It was all even through the first eight points of set two until a 4-1 run by the Cowgirls gave them a 9-5 lead. Wyoming would maintain a four to five point lead over the next several points until a little run by the Falcons brought them to within three, 13-10. UW answered with five of the next eight points to give them an 18-13 advantage. Air Force would battle back and went on a 7-2 run to tie the score at 20 all. Kirby recorded a kill to stop the scoring drought by the Cowgirls. With it all tied up at 23, two straight kills by Plante gave the Cowgirls the set, 25-23.
The momentum shifted over to the Cowgirls as they opened up an 8-2 lead to begin the third set. After a kill by the Falcons, Wyoming went on an 6-2 run to extend the lead to nine, 14-5. Air Force would score the next three of four to close the margin to seven, 15-8. The set was never close after that as Wyoming extended the lead to double-figures and won the set 25-15.
Wyoming went up 4-2 early in the fourth set, but two straight points by Air Force made it four all. The two teams remained all tied up through the next 12 points to make it ten all. The Cowgirls went on a 5-2 run to put UW up 15-12. The Falcons chipped away at the lead and closed the gap to one, 16-15. Two straight points by Plante would increase the lead back to three, 18-15. The set stayed to within two or three points the rest of the way, but the Cowgirls finally took the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
The Cowgirls will close out the week on Saturday against the New Mexico Lobos. The match is set for 5:00 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
