In their final home match of the season, the Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball team (5-18 overall, 4-10 in the MWC) earned a four set victory (26-24, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19) against the San Diego State Aztecs (8-17 overall, 5-10 in the MWC) on Saturday night in Laramie.

"This was a great win for our seniors and our program," said UW head coach Carrie Yerty. "It's nice at the end of the season when you've been going five sets with teams to get a victory in four. I'm proud of our seniors and this team for their efforts all year. We still have another week to go, but this is a nice win.

"These seniors have been the foundation for our program. For the first year with the program, I couldn't have asked for any other individuals leading them."

Four players finished the night in double-figures led by sophomore Lauren Whitney. She recorded a team high 18 kills, while hitting .273 (18-6-44). Jenna Arneson chipped in 14 kills, while Dani Bedore added 13 kills and 14 digs. JennaRae Jester also recorded 11 kills, and Carissa Lee tallied a team high 17 digs. As a team, Wyoming hit .207 (63-28-169) and finished with 60 digs.

San Diego State was led by Kyley Sexton with 12 kills and a .321 (12-3-28) hitting percentage. Lauren Salisbury added nine kills, while two other players added eight. The Aztecs hit .163 (45-23-135) for the match and out blocked the Cowgirls 13-4.

The score was close in the early going of the first set until SDSU took a small 6-4 lead. After the Cowgirls scored the next point, the Aztecs went on a 3-1 run to go back up by three, 9-6. Wyoming answered with the next five of six to go ahead, 11-10. San Diego State would make a 4-1 run to regain a two point advantage, 14-12. After Wyoming tied it up at 14, the scoring went back and forth with the Aztecs gaining the upper hand 22-18. Wyoming wouldn't give up as they went on a 5-2 run pull even at 23. SDSU earned set point at 24-23, but the Cowgirls scored the last three points to win the set 26-24.

In the second set, the Aztecs took a slight 4-2 lead. Wyoming answered with four straight to pull ahead by two, 6-4. San Diego State scored six of eight to go up 10-8. Wyoming pulled even at 11, but a 4-1 run by the Aztecs gave them a 15-12 advantage. After the Cowgirls tied it up at 15, SDSU scored the next two points to go back up 17-15. This time, Wyoming responded with a 5-1 run to give them a two point advantage, 20-18. They would never relinquish the lead as they won the set 25-21.

The Aztecs stormed out in the third set to take a 7-2 lead. Three straight points by the Cowgirls pulled them to within two, 7-5, but SDSU went on a 10-2 run to extend the lead to double-figures, 17-7. They would continue to maintain their lead throughout the set. The Cowgirls tried to battle back and pulled to within four, but would come up short, 25-20.

In the fourth set, Wyoming opened up an 8-4 advantage. The Aztecs scored three straight to pull within one, 8-7. The Cowgirls responded with a 4-1 run to make it 12-8. After extended that lead to six, 17-11, they went on an 8-3 run to pull ahead by nine, 23-14. San Diego State wouldn't go away as they scored four of the next five to make it a six point set, 24-18. The Cowgirls would hold on to win the set 25-19 and the match, 3-1.

The Cowgirls will close out the season next week on the road in Utah. They will take on Utah Utes, on Thursday, Nov. 20, and the BYU Cougars, on Saturday, Nov. 22.
