The Wyoming volleyball team closed out the 2003 season with a three game loss (20-30, 22-30, 20-30) against the second seeded Utah Utes (19-7 overall, 12-2 in the MWC) on Thursday morning in San Diego.

It was all Utah to begin the match as they took a 7-2 lead. The Cowgirls battled back scoring the next four of six points to pull within three, but the Utes scored three straight to regain a 12-6 lead. Utah not only maintained that lead, but increased it with a 9-5 run to go up ten, 21-11. Despite being down, Wyoming continued to fight and pulled within seven, but that would be as close as they would get. The Utes would score the final six of nine points to take game one 30-20.

The Utes took an early 6-2 lead to being game two, but Wyoming battled with a 3-1 run to pull within two 7-5. Utah continued to keep a three to four point margin, just keeping the Cowgirls at arms length, until a small run from the Utes gave them a 20-15 advantage. The Cowgirls tried to battle their way back in it by scoring the next three of four points, but once again Utah answered with 5-2 run to go up 26-20. Scoring the last four of six points, the Utes would take the game 30-22 and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Wyoming once again fell behind early in game three 4-1, but they would fight back and close to within two, 9-7. The Utes maintained a two or three point lead for much of the game as the Cowgirls couldn't seem to pull any closer than that. With the score 15-13 in favor of the Utes, the momentum seemed to shift their way as they went on a 6-3 run to go up 21-16. That would be all the Utes would need and as close as the Cowgirls would get. Utah scored the next nine of 13 to win the game 30-20 and the match 3-0.

"We played a very good Utah team with the MWC player of the year Kim Turner," said head coach Jim Barnes. "She was definitely on top of her game, and we couldn't slow her down. It was a really tough break for us, we weren't able to adjust to the changes in the line-up and the kids tried to fight through it, but we just didn't have enough."

The Cowgirls were led by freshman Andrea Seele, who finished with a team high nine kills, while hitting .280 (9-2-25) for the match. Senior Hana Perlee led the team in digs with eight. As a team, they finished the match hitting only .180 (37-19-100) compared to the Utes .404 (47-9-94).

Utah was led by Kim Turner, who recorded a match high 16 kills and eight block assists. The Utes also out blocked the Cowgirls ten to two in the match.

The Cowgirls wrap up the season with a 15-16 overall record and a 4-10 mark in the Mountain West Conference.
