Wyoming Volleyball Set to Open Up Regular Season Play

Third-year head coach Carrie Yerty and the Wyoming volleyball team will open up the 2010 season this weekend at home as they host the UniWyo Wyoming Invite, Friday-Saturday, August 27-28.
They will start things off on Friday, August 27, against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds at 1:30 p.m. and the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears at 7:00 p.m. They will take on the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks the following day at 1:30 p.m. and the Murray State Racers, at 7:00 p.m., to close out the weekend.
The Cowgirls return all six starters and eight letterwinners to a squad that finished 13-18 overall and 3-13 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago, including 2009 MWC Freshman of the Year Jodi Purdy. She averaged a team leading 3.43 kills and 3.90 points per set, while adding 2.53 digs and 28 service aces. Also back for the Cowgirls are returning starters Dani Bedore, Camille Coffman, JennaRae Jester, Barbara Lasic and Lauren Whitney, plus sophomores Makenzie Bartsch and Jadranka Tramosljanin, and redshirt freshmen Calli Miller, Emily Rochelle and Reese Roehrkasse. Wyoming also welcomes five newcomers to the team as well.
UW will start things off against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds, on Friday, August 27. This will also be the first match of the season for the Thunderbirds as well. They are led by Analaine Pelaez who averaged 4.29 kills and 2.78 digs per set last season. SUU returns all six starters and 12 letterwinners on a team that went 9-20 overall and 7-12 in the Summit League a year ago. This is the second meeting between the two teams. Wyoming won the only meeting 3-0 on Sept. 6, 1988. Southern Utah is coached by Debby Baker who is in her second year with the program.
In their second match of the weekend, the Cowgirls will play the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears. They will play Northern Arizona before taking on the Cowgirls. UCA is led by Chloe Smith who averaged 4.46 kills and 1.99 digs per set a year ago. They return four starters and seven letterwinners to a team that went 27-3 overall and 16-0 in the Southland Conference a year ago. This is the first meeting ever between the two schools. Central Arkansas is coached by Steven McRoberts who is in his sixth season with the program.
In their first match of the day on Saturday, the Cowgirls will take on the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. The Lumberjacks will play Central Arkansas and Murray State before taking on UW. NAU returns five starters and ten letterwinners to a team that went 8-17 overall and 5-11 in the Big Sky Conference last season. This will be the tenth meeting between the two teams. Wyoming leads the series 7-2. The last time the two teams met was September 11, 2009 as the Cowgirls defeated NAU 3-2 in Flagstaff. Northern Arizona is coached by Craig Choate who is in his third season with the program.
Wyoming will close out the weekend against the Murray State Racers, on Saturday night, at 7:00 p.m. The Racers will play Southern Utah, Northern Arizona and Central Arkansas before taking on the Cowgirls. They are led by Ashley Nenninger who averaged 2.83 kills and 0.91 blocks per set last season. MSU returns six starters and nine letterwinners to a team that went 13-18 overall and 11-7 in the Ohio Valley Conference a year ago. This is the first ever meeting between the two schools. Murray State is coached by David Schwepker who is in his 13th season with the program.
