Aug. 30, 2007
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Cowgirls will be on the road this weekend as participants at the UC Irvine/Nike Invitational, Aug. 31 - Sept. 1, in Irvine, Calif. They will start things off on Friday, Aug. 31, against the Portland Pilots, at noon, followed by a match-up with the Toledo Rockets, at 6 p.m. The Cowgirls will close things out against the host school UC Irvine Anteaters, on Saturday, Sept. 1, at 8 p.m. All times listed are Mountain Time.
"We have to take it one match at a time with three matches over the weekend," said UW head coach Pat Stangle. "We had a real battle with two five game matches to open things up, so we need to come in and take care of business. Overall, I am pleased with the play of our outside hitters, but we have to get the middles more involved and clean up our passing."
The Cowgirls will open up their second weekend of non-conference play, against the Portland Pilots who come in to the weekend 2-1 in the early season with wins over Northern Colorado and South Dakota State. They are led by K.C. Fox who is averaging three kills and one dig per game. She is followed by Jessica Clemens and Ashley Grayson who are each adding 2.73 kills. Portland returns six starters and ten letterwinners to a squad that went 9-18 overall and 2-12 in the West Coast Conference last season. This is the third meeting between the two teams. The series is tied at 1-1. The last time the two teams met was Sept. 9, 2000 as the Cowgirls defeated the Pilots 3-1. Portland is coached by Doug Sparks who is in his eighth season with the program.
In their second match of the weekend, the Cowgirls will play the Toledo Rockets who enter the weekend 1-3 overall. They are led by TaNeisha Winters who is averaging 3.54 kills and 2.23 digs per game. Shannon Strachan is also adding 3.46 kills and 2.23 digs. They return four starters and 12 letterwinners to a team that went 11-21 overall and 6-10 in the Mid-American Conference a year ago. This is the first meeting between the two schools. Toledo is coached by Kent Miller who is in his 11th season with the program.
Wyoming will close out the weekend against the host school UC Irvine Anteaters, who are currently 3-0 in the early season with wins over Canisius, Gonzaga and Montana. They are led by Lauren Kellerman who is averaging 3.50 kills per game. She is followed by Kristin Kelley who is adding three kills. UC-Irvine returns five starters and 11 letterwinners to a team that went 13-16 overall and 7-7 in the Big West Conference. This is the second meeting between the two schools. Wyoming has won the only meeting. The last time the two teams met was September 18, 1997 as the Cowgirls defeated the Anteaters 3-0. UC-Irvine is coached by Charlie Brande who is in his eighth season with the program.
