Wyoming Volleyball On The Road For The First Time In 2011

The Wyoming Volleyball team will be on the road for the first time this season as they travel to the state of Iowa. They will participate in the Sheraton West Inn Drake Invitational, Fri.-Sat., Sept. 2-3, in Des Moines, Iowa. The Cowgirls will play the Milwaukee Panthers, on Friday, followed by matches with Drake and IPFW, on Saturday, to close out the weekend. The matches can be followed on www.godrakebulldogs.com.
Wyoming enters the week with a 3-1 (.750) record overall after winning the UniWyo Wyoming Invite this past weekend. The Cowgirls are currently led by junior outside hitter Jodi Purdy who is averaging 2.57 kills, 3.14 digs and 1.36 blocks per set. She ranks fourth in blocks and eighth in points in the league. She is followed by redshirt freshman Erin Kirby who is adding 2.43 kills and 1.14 blocks, while hitting a team high .397 (34-7-68). As a team, they are averaging 11.93 kills, 10.64 digs and 3.18 blocks per set.
The Cowgirls will take on the Milwaukee Panthers in the opening round of the Sheraton West Inn Drake Invitational, on Friday, Sept. 2. Milwaukee is currently 2-1 overall this season. They are led by Kerri Schuh who is averaging 3.85 kills and 2.38 digs per set. UWM returns four starters and nine letterwinners on a team that went 20-9 overall and 15-1 in the Horizon League a year ago. This is the second meeting between the two teams. Milwaukee won the only meeting between the two teams. The last time the two teams met was Sept. 8, 2000 as the Panthers defeated the Cowgirls 3-0. Milwaukee is coached by Susie Johnson who is in her fifth season with the program.
In their second match of the weekend, Wyoming will play the host school Drake Bulldogs on Saturday, Sept. 3. Drake is 1-2 entering the weekend. They are led by Mikayla Sims who is averaging three kills and 1.44 blocks per set. They return three starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 23-11 overall and 8-10 in the Missouri Valley Conference a year ago. This is the first ever meeting between the two schools. Drake is coached by Tony Sunga who is in his first season with the program.
The Cowgirls will close out the weekend against the IPFW Mastodons. The Mastodons are 2-1 so far this season. They are led by Emily Spencer who is averaging 4.90 kills and 3.50 per set. IPFW returns three starters and seven letterwinners to a team that went 21-11 overall and 14-4 in the Summit League a year ago. This will be the first ever meeting between the two schools. IPFW is coached by Kelley Hartley Hutton who is in her 13th season with the program.
