Cowgirl Volleyball Continues Tournament Play on the Road in Hawaii

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The Cowgirl Volleyball Team will continue tournament play this weekend, Sept. 4-6, at the Honolulu Advertiser Volleyball Challenge, in Honolulu, Hawaii. They will start things off on Thursday, against the Cincinnati Bearcats, at 9:00 p.m. The following day, they will play the host school Hawaii Rainbow Wahine, at 11:00 p.m., while wrapping up the tournament on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. All times listed are Mountain Time.

Wyoming enters the week with a 0-3 (.000) record overall after playing three matches at the Corvallis Invitational last weekend. The Cowgirls are currently led by outside hitter Dani Bedore who is averaging 3.17 kills and 1.50 per set. She is followed Lauren Whitney who is adding 2.58 kills and 1.08 digs per set. As a team, they are averaging 11.42 kills and 13.17 digs per set.

The Cowgirls will open up the Honolulu Advertiser VB Challenge against the Cincinnati Bearcats on Thursday. They are 3-0 overall this season. They are led by Stephanie Niemer who is averaging 4.40 kills and two digs. Cincinnati returns five starters and 11 letterwinners on a team that went 19-12 overall and 9-5 in the Big East Conference a year ago. This is the second meeting between the two teams. Cincinnati leads the series 1-0. The last time the two teams met was August 31, 2001 as the Bearcats defeated the Cowgirls 3-1. Cincinnati is coached by Reed Sunahara who is in his ninth season with the program.

In their second match of the weekend, the Cowgirls will play the host school Hawaii Rainbow Wahine, on Friday. They are currently 1-2 overall, 11th in the AVCA Coaches Poll and will play Minnesota before taking on the Cowgirls. Hawaii is led by Jamie Houston who is averaging 3.44 kills and 2.44 digs. They return five starters and nine letterwinners to a team that went 27-6 and 15-1 in the Western Athletic Conference a year ago. This is the tenth meeting between the two schools. Hawaii leads the series 9-0. The last time the two teams met was November 9, 1996 as UH defeated the Cowgirls 3-0. Hawaii is coached by Dave Shoji who is in his 34th season with the program.

 

 

Wyoming will close out the weekend against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, on Saturday afternoon. The Gophers are 3-0 overall, ranked 12th overall in the AVCA Coaches Poll and will play Cincinnati and Hawaii before taking on the Cowgirls. They are led by Kyla Roehrig who is averaging 3.30 kills and .60 blocks. Minnesota returns all six starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 18-13 overall and 11-9 in the Big 10 a year ago. This is the third meeting between the two teams. The last time the two teams met was September 4, 2004 as the Gophers defeated the Cowgirls 3-0. Minnesota is coached by Mike Hebert who is in his 13th season with the program.
