Cowgirls to Play in Jayhawk Invitational

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball team will play in their final non-conference tournament at the Jayhawk Invitational, this Fri.- Sat., Sept. 7-8, in Lawrence, Kan. They will start things off on Friday, against the Morehead State Eagles, at 9 a.m. followed by a match against the host Kansas Jayhawks, at 6 p.m. The Cowgirls will close things out against the Saint Peter's (NJ) Peahens on Saturday, at 8 a.m. All times listed are Mountain Time and can be followed through Gametracker on this site.

"We've been in a lot of tight matches which I hope will help us down the road," said UW head coach Pat Stangle. "We lost a couple of close matches we were capable of winning and just didn't take advantage of it. We have a good opportunity this upcoming weekend and we look forward to a challenge from each and every team."

The Cowgirls will play their final tournament matches at the Jayhawk Classic beginning with the Morehead State Eagles, on Friday morning. The Eagles are currently 4-3 in the early season. They are led by Ashley Doscher who is averaging 3.81 kills and 2.52 digs per game. She is followed by Erin Peak who is adding 2.96 kills and 2.41 digs. Morehead State returns three starters and seven letterwinners to a squad that went 21-13 overall and 10-6 in the Ohio Valley Conference last season. This is the first meeting ever between the two schools. Morehead State is coached by Jaime Gordon who is in his fifth season with the program.

In their second match of the weekend, the Cowgirls will play the host school Kansas Jayhawks, who are currently 4-3 overall. They are led by Emily Brown who is averaging 6.27 assists, 1.73 kills and 1.65 digs per game. Flavia Lino is also adding 2.38 kills and two digs. They return four starters and nine letterwinners to a team that went 10-19 overall and 3-17 in the Big 12 Conference a year ago. This is the third meeting between the two schools, which is all tied up at 1-1. The last time the two teams met was September 26, 1992 as the Cowgirls defeated the Jayhawks 3-0. Kansas is coached by Ray Bechard, who is in his tenth season with the program and his 23rd as a head coach.

 

 

Wyoming will close out the weekend against the Saint Peters (NJ) Peahens, on Saturday morning. The Peahens are currently 2-7 overall in the early season. They are led by Kate McFadden who is averaging 2.20 kills and 3.77 digs per game. She is followed by Kim Mendoza who is adding 2.12 kills and 2.41 digs per game. Saint Peters returns three starters and five letterwinners to a team that went 15-24 overall and 6-12 in the Metro Atlantic Conference. This is the first meeting ever between the two schools. Saint Peters is coached by Mike Massone who is in his third season.
