Wyoming Volleyball Set to Open Conference Play

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The Wyoming volleyball team will open up 2006 Mountain West Conference play this weekend as they travel to Albuquerque, N.M., and Fort Worth, Texas. They start off against the New Mexico Lobos, on Thursday night, at 7:00 p.m., and will then take on the TCU Horned Frogs, on Saturday afternoon, at 1:00 p.m. MT.

Wyoming enters the week with a 6-3 (.667) record after going 1-2 at the Hilton Las Cruces Classic this past weekend. The Cowgirls are currently led by junior outside hitter Rachel Smith, who is averaging 4.59 kills, which is second in the MWC, and 2.03 digs per game. She is followed closely by freshman Annie Meyers who is averaging 3.85 kills and 2.97 digs on the year. As a team, they are averaging 14.97 kills, 16.47 digs and a .229 (509-188-1400) hitting percentage.

New Mexico comes in to the week currently 4-7 overall and are led by Jeanne Fairchild who is averaging 2.68 kills and 1.20 digs per game. The Lobos return three starters and eight letterwinners to a squad that went 14-14 overall and 6-10 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago. This is the 55th meeting between the two teams. Wyoming leads the series 31-23. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 19, 2005 in Laramie as the Cowgirls won the match 3-0. New Mexico is coached by Kelley McKee who is in her fifth season with the program and her 14th as a head coach.

In the second match of the weekend, Wyoming will face the TCU Horned Frogs, on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 1:00 p.m. in Fort Worth. They are currently 10-2 overall and will play Texas State before facing the Cowgirls. TCU is led by Anna Vaughn who is averaging 3.90 kills and .86 blocks per game. They return five starters and ten letterwinners to a squad that went 16-18 overall and 3-13 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago. This is the eighth meeting between the two teams. Wyoming leads 6-1. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 16, 2005 as the Cowgirls defeated the Frogs 3-0 in Laramie. TCU is coached by Prentice Lewis who is in her fifth year with the program and as a head coach.
