Cowgirl Volleyball Set To Open Up Conference Play

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The Wyoming volleyball team will open up Mountain West Conference play this weekend as they travel to Las Vegas and San Diego. They start off against the UNLV Rebels, on Thursday night, at 8:00 p.m. MT, and will then take on the San Diego State Aztecs, on Saturday afternoon, at 1:00 p.m. MT.

Wyoming enters the week with a 5-4 record overall after losing to Florida A&M and New Mexico State this past weekend. The Cowgirls are currently led by sophomore outside hitter Rachel Smith, who is averaging 3.68 kills and 2.13 digs per game. She is followed closely by Andrea Seele who is hitting .226 (66-30-159) on the year while adding 2.20 kills per game. Freshman Carissa Lee, who currently ranks second in the MWC, is averaging 4.38 digs per game. As a team, they are averaging conference leading 17.0 digs per game and 13.68 kills per game.

The Rebels are currently 4-7 overall, and are led by outside hitter Maria Aladjova, who is averaging 3.53 kills and 1.55 digs per game. They return four starters and eight letterwinners to a squad that went 15-12 overall and 8-6 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago.

This is the 20th meeting between the two teams. UNLV leads 10-9. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 18, 2004 when the Rebels defeated the Cowgirls 3-0 in the MWC Tournament. UNLV is coached by Allison Keeley who is in her second season with the program.

The San Diego State Aztecs will be the second conference opponent of the weekend for the Cowgirls. They are currently 8-4 overall and will play Colorado State on Thursday night before facing the Cowgirls. SDSU is led by Melanie Green who is averaging 3.66 kills and 2.97 digs per game. They return five starters and ten letterwinners to a squad that went 4-25 overall and 4-10 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago.

This is the 29th meeting between the two teams. SDSU leads the series 24-4. The last time the two teams met was Oct. 30, 2004, when the Cowgirls defeated the Aztecs, 3-0. San Diego State is coached by Mark Warner, who is in his 11th season with the program.
