Wyoming Volleyball's Purdy and Kirby Garner Post Season Honors
Nov. 17, 2011
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Outside hitter Jodi Purdy and middle blocker Erin Kirby of the Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team were recognized as All-Mountain West Conference selections on Thursday as the 2011 MWC All-Conference Team and other postseason honors were announced by the league office. The Mountain West All-Conference Volleyball awards are selected by the league's eight head coaches.
"There are a lot of great players in the Mountain West," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "We are really proud that Jodi and Erin could be recognized among the league's elite. Jodi's ability to put together a complete match separates her and Erin's blocking ability has changed the way Wyoming competes defensively. Neither could have achieved this goal without the help of their teammates. The entire Wyoming family is proud of them."
For Purdy, it's the second straight year that she has been selected to the All-Conference Team while she was named MW Freshman of the Year in 2009. It's the first such honor in volleyball for Kirby, but the second in the calendar year. She was named All-Conference during the outdoor track and field season after winning the 400-meter hurdles in the spring of 2011.
Senior Kaitlyn Steffan was named Player of the Year, Stephanie Holland of TCU was named Freshman of the Year, while Colorado State's Tom Hilbert was voted Coach of the Year.
A junior from Winterset, Iowa, Purdy started in all 30 matches for the Cowgirls, while playing in 113 sets this season. She is averaging a team leading 3.42 kills and 4.09 points, while adding 3.20 digs, which was second on the team. In conference matches, she averaged 3.17 kills, 3.17 digs and 3.72 points per set. She is ranked third in points (4.09 pps), fourth in kills (3.42 kps), sixth in service aces (0.27 saps) and ninth in digs (3.20 dps), while in league matches she was fifth in kills (3.17 kps), seventh in points (3.72 pps) and ninth in digs (3.17 dps). She recorded double-figures in kill 22 times and digs 23 times, while recording 20 double-doubles. Purdy was named to the preseason All-MW team earlier this year.
Kirby, from Evanston, Wyo., has started in 30 matches in her first season of competition. She is averaging 1.76 kills and 2.41 points, while leading the way in blocks for the Cowgirls. She is also hitting .314 (199-57-452). In conference matches, she is hitting .252 (83-30-210) and adding a team high 1.31 blocks. She ranks second in blocks and seven in hitting percentage in overall matches, while being ranked second in blocks in MW matches.
The Cowgirls will open up the 2011 Mountain West Tournament on Friday, Nov. 18. They will face the New Mexico Lobos beginning at 8:30 p.m. in Albuquerque.
