Dec. 3, 2013

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Junior middle blocker Erin Kirby and senior libero Becky Stewart of the Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team were recognized on Tuesday as the 2013 MW All-Conference Team and other postseason honors were announced by the league office. Kirby earned her third-consecutive honor, while for Stewart it is her second award in as many seasons. The Mountain West All-Conference Volleyball awards are selected by the league's 11 head coaches.

"Erin and Becky have been great for us all season and it is nice to see them honored for their accomplishments," said head coach Chad Callihan. "We have tried to create an atmosphere driven by team goals but with Becky leading the conference in digs and Erin being ranked first in the country for blocks during much of this season it is nice to see both of these young ladies receive some individual attention. They have both worked hard all year to become more complete players and we are proud of them for continuing to develop."

Senior Samantha Peters was named Player of the Year, Julia Warren of New Mexico was selected Freshman of the Year, Holly Franks of Fresno State was the Newcomer of the Year, while Colorado State's Tom Hilbert was voted Coach of the Year.

Kirby was selected to her third All-MW team in as many seasons. She started and played in every match in 2013 for the Cowgirls plus 127 sets. She finished the season ranked first in the MW in overall blocking averaging 1.77 per set. In conference matches, she averaged 1.64 blocks per set, which also led the league. Her season-blocking average of 1.77 ranked second in the nation for second straight year. She was a key contributor in the Cowgirls' eighth-ranked team blocking that tallied 2.89 per set. Kirby finished the season with 225 total blocks which is the most in a single-season in Cowgirl history. Her 573 career blocks places her in a tie for second all-time as well. During the year, she was the only Cowgirl to eclipse the .300 mark, hitting .353 (313-67-697) which placed her eighth in the conference.

Stewart earned her second career All-MW honor as the designated libero. She finished the season with a school-record 624 single-season digs playing in 32 matches and 120 sets for the Cowgirls. Her season average of 5.20 digs per set put her atop the conference in overall matches and 23rd in the country. In conference matches, she finished with 350 digs in 65 sets to average 5.38 per set which also led the league. She finished her career as the all-time leader with 1,683 career digs.

The Cowgirls concluded the 2013 season with a 21-13 record overall and an 11-9 mark in the Mountain West. They also ended the year on a seven match winning streak.
